[TeenMinistry] See You At The Pole

See You At The Pole is tomorrow.  Arrive at school early, join other Christian students in prayer.  It’s that simple.  Make a stand in your school…it’s one thing to be a Christian at church but it’s another to stand up at school.  Most will begin at 7 AM.

You can go to http://www.syatp.com/home/ for more information.

[TeenMinistry] Every Young Woman's/Man's Battle

Our Sr. High classes got off to a good start yesterday.

The ladies did some introduction to the class and dove into EYWB Chapter 1.  The Girls talked about how wisdom is the path to innocence, but ignorance often is the path to evil.  (Romans 16:19 & 1 Peter 1:13-16)  We also talked about how even “good Christian girls are not exempt from sexual temptations.  We began to examine how sin likes to hide in secret.  You must dare to tell the truth about your struggles if you truly want victory and freedom.  NEXT WEEK we will be in Chapters 2 & 3 of EYWB discussing God’s blueprints for sexuality and the real meaning of sexual integrity.

The guys laid some groundwork for being open and honest with one another as we deal with sexual integrity.  We identified ways that we are challenged every day to keep our thoughts pure.  The culture (even Christians) around us is so saturated by sex that we wake up each morning at a disadvantage.  If we’re going to get anywhere in this battle we have to become aware of the tools that Satan uses to keep us captive.   We discussed what Paul meant in Ephesians when he says “there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity…” (5:3).  WOW!  What does “hint” mean to you?  NEXT WEEK we will be in Chapters 1 & 2 of EYMB – make sure you read the introduction as well! (that’s only 14 pages!)

If you ordered a book on Sunday, they will be in on Wednesday.  If you haven’t paid for yours yet, they are $12.  If you can’t afford it, Lee Ann and I will buy it for you! (That’s how important we think this is!).  Read it, make notes in it, underline it…this is a book you may come back to often as you go through high school, college and even into young adulthood!

SR. HIGH PARENTS – I encourage you to be reading the book as well (make sure you read ALL of it before you call me J ).  If you want your own copy, let me know.  The principles in these books could have helped and can still help a lot of us become the man or woman is calling US to be in Christ.  MORE IMPORTANTLY for us they can help us mold and shape our children as they begin to develop a faith that is their own.

MIDDLE SCHOOL PARENTS – while we wouldn’t suggest all middle schoolers read this material, we do see some of our own Lafayette middle schoolers reaching the level of needing to go through this material.  If your teen or pre-teen is asking about dating – IT’S TIME!  If they ARE dating (i.e. “boyfriend”/ “girlfriend” they spend time with) then you need to do this YESTERDAY!  If you need other materials to help you, please Lee Ann or me know.

LATE ELEMENTARY & EARLY MIDDLE SCHOOL – your kids aren’t even thinking about this stuff right – WRONG!  Unless they live in a cocoon (they don’t see billboards, watch TV including Disney Channel or NICK, listen to pop music, or spend any time with friends) they have been introduced to sexuality.  As early as 3rd & 4th grade (sometimes earlier) they are being introduced to Western Culture sexuality.  Don’t be surprised – arm yourself now.  “Preparing Your Son/Daughter for Every Young Man’s/Woman’s Battle” is an excellent tool for you to begin the process with your pre-adolescent child.  Believe me – it’s so much easier to start here than when they are 16!

ALL PARENTS – Ignorance is NOT bliss, whatever you do, please don’t hand this or any book on sexuality to your child and assume they are going to read it!  Be the parent!  Walk with them through it.  Don’t be afraid of your past or present.  God has a way of working on us and healing us through our roles as parents.  In our culture today, we cannot afford to assume that the precious life that God has entrusted you with will be OK if you just hold your breath long enough.  Be pro-active, be intentional.  Is it tough, yes.  Is it uncomfortable, yep.  Is it worth it – you bet!  You may find yourself scrambling and wondering what to do.  That’s OK.  Come talk to Lee Ann and me (or someone else you trust) – that’s why we’re here.  God can do some powerful things here…are you ready to anti-up?

[TeenMinistry] AWESOME RETREAT

The rain held off and God showed up!  Twenty-Seven of us spent an awesome time of praising and praying at Camp NeOTez this past weekend.  Campfire, s’mores, chubby-bunny (Kate won with something like 9 marshmallows), devotionals, quiet time, singing and building relationships with one another.

The Lord is moving among our teens at Lafayette

[TeenMinistry] Teens & Lifebridge

All –

There is the potential that some teens from Lifebridge Church, which has been meeting in our building for a while, may be joining us for our Wednesday evening classes.  For that reason, tonight and next Wednesday night (weather permitting) we will be meeting outside behind the EPICenter (aka – teen house) for class. – we will be doing some group building activities and playing volleyball….PLEASE make sure they AND ALL of our visiting teens feel welcomed to our group!

We have had a number of visitors lately and many of those are returning – that’s because YOU are doing a great job of making your youth group a place where people can come and feel accepted.  You are creating a place where God can come in and do His work through the Spirit!  Thanks to those who are inviting your friends and to those who are welcoming them!

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!

[TeenMinistry] Fall Quarter Youth Ministry Classes

Good Morning.

Before I talk about Fall, I want to say Thank You to Greg and Dawn Malcolm for teaching the Sr. High Sunday morning classes, to Mandy Johnson & Heatherlyn Neu along with Lee Ann Brown for teaching the Middle School Girls and to Charles Portwood for helping me with the Middle School Guys classes this quarter!  Also Daryl Simmons and Lynn Rardin have been faithful in coming in on Wednesday nights helping Lee Ann and me to work with and mentor our teens – what a blessing all of you are!

******

Our Fall Quarter is winding up.  I am excited about the classes that will be going on in our Youth Ministry this quarter.

Our Sr. High Sunday morning classes will be based on the books "Every Young Man's/Woman's Battle".  We will be discussing Sexual Integrity.  I have attached a detailed letter that I have sent to parents via snail mail. As mentioned in the letter, parents it is vital that your child has their own copy of the book to be reading before each class time.

Jr. High parents, you really should already be discussing many of these things with your Middle School student.  Two excellent books that will help you do so are "Preparing Your Son/Daughter for Every Man's/Woman's Battle".  In fact if your child is in 4th or 5th grade and you haven’t started talking about sexual purity and integrity with them, they are probably already learning the wrong things through the media and friends at school/on the bus.

Our Jr. High Sunday morning will be discussing the book of Galatians.  Ed Allstun and Dennis Enix will be leading this class.  Although it is a textual study, you will be looking into some of the history surrounding this book as well as how to live out TODAY what Paul taught so many years ago.

On Wednesday evenings we will continue our study or Romans.

[TeenMinistry] We need a house -September 21

ACU wants to host our high school teens for a lunch on Sunday, September 21.  We would like to do that at someone’s home.  They are providing the pizza and drinks all you would have to do is provide the space (pool table, volleyball net or something else like that would be nice too) – we also need access to a television and DVD Player

We would need your house immediately following AM classes (as soon as we can get there) until about 2 PM.

More information for the teens will be coming as soon as we get a location.

[TeenMinistry] Silent Auction!

Hey Teens our silent auction went fairly well.  Many of you were bid on.  You should be contacted soon to about your job responsibility.

It will go something like this:

  • You will get the name and number of the person who bid on you.
  • You need to call that person (by THIS FRIDAY) to set up a time when you can perform your service – the sooner the better.
    • Make sure you check with your parents about the timing if you need to arrange rides, etc.
  • That person may want to negotiate with you for doing more or different work…that is up to you and your schedule…try to be flexible – remember all the money you raise doing this goes to your Teen Center (The EPICenter).  If they ask you to do “more work” then you should be paid for more time
    • For instance – if they bid on you to do “up to” 3 hours work at $24 then “your rate” should be $8 an hour.
  • Please contact me by e-mail, facebook or phone (636.549.8644) when you have contacted them and set up a time.  I will send you a “work-sheet” for you to fill out and that they can sign when you are done.
  • You will go do the work to the best of your ability – if you were bid on for “up to 3 hours” then - if you finish early, you should say “what else can I do?”
  • After the work is completed, you will hand them your WorkSheet, they will sign it and give you a check made out to “Lafayette Teen Ministry” (or they can give the check to me).
  • I will follow up with them to make sure they were satisfied with your work.
  • We will have more money to help finish the Teen Center (EPICenter)

Thank you to those who volunteered their time and services for this!

Because of the Cross,

Mike
