[TeenMinistry] North City Mission

As we’ve been talking about in classes, this Sunday, we will leave after classes to go to North City.  We will be doing 2 things there.  We will be doing some work for them as well as working with them to prepare for TABS.

Bring:

  • Lunch money (fast food)
  • “work” clothes

We should be back by 4:30 PM

[TeenMinistry] TABS - May 4

TABS is coming up quickly.  Due to LifeBridge meeting in our facility, it was going to be difficult to host it in our building so I’ve been trying to come up with options.

We will be co-hosting with the North City Church at their building on May 4.  I am working out details with Matt Chandler but Lafayette will still be working with the food and the program.

As mentioned in another e-mail, we will be going to North City this Sunday to work for them (as a Mission Sunday project) and with them for TABS.  (depending on how things go this Sunday, we will most likely have another TABS practice on, Saturday, May 3 and maybe some Wednesday nights with just our teens here at the building)

Here are some things we will need:

·        TEENS TO GO – we need a good showing from Lafayette Teens

·        Parents to volunteer to drive – when we get that good showing from our teens, our van will not hold them all

·        Parents and church to donate food items (will be letting you know soon what we need)

·        Teens to help with program (commitment of this Sunday – April 13 as well as probably Saturday, May 3)

Is Your Family Drifting?

This devotional was written by Jim Burns

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.—Hebrews 12:1

Most days, early in the morning, I walk our golden retriever, Hobie, by Dana  Point Harbor, which is near our home. My wife Cathy, who prefers power walks, calls it a “wimp walk” because there are no hills. Recently, Hobie and I were strolling along the water when we crossed paths with an older couple holding hands. Since the release of my book Creating an Intimate Marriage, I have been especially intrigued by couples who look like they have it together. After exchanging greetings, the three of us started talking about Hobie. A bit later I asked them, “You seem so happy. What is your secret to keeping a marriage intimate and strong?”

They traded glances and then sheepishly turned to me. “Oh, we’re not married. And we wouldn’t want our spouses to know about our (wink/wink) ‘business trip.’”

I’m not usually without words, but their answer left me stunned. Obviously this couple was having an affair. I mumbled an awkward “Oh, I’m sorry,” and Hobie and I wandered off. The probably took my apology to mean I was sorry for assuming they were married. Actually, I was sorry that they had chosen to forfeit their God-given potential for intimacy in their marriages for the false intimacy of an affair. I’m sorry for their spouses. I’m sorry for their kids. I’m sorry for their blatant disobedience to our Creator God.

What went wrong with their marriages? I will never know, but I can guarantee that there will be a trail of broken relationships along the way. If I was going to guess, I would say that these people each married the love of their life, but when kids and work and bills and all the rest came along, their marriage relationship was neglected. It probably started with small compromises. In the midst of all their other responsibilities, they overlooked their relationship with their spouse and neglected the commitment to their marriage vows. Then their relationship drifted. Sometimes people don’t even know they’re drifting, until one day they look up and ask, “What on earth happened to us?”

What does this story have to do with confident parenting? Actually, I think the same thing happens with our roles as moms and dads. While we would never neglect the physical needs of our children, we often find ourselves drifting, neglecting the other areas that make a huge difference in a family’s life. We settle for mediocrity in the area of leadership with our children. Families find a false sense of security in the busyness of life, and parents allow circumstance and chance to “guide” their children’s move toward independence.1

Today, spend some time reflecting on whether or not neglect and drifting are part of your family life. If needed, take action to reaffirm your commitment to your family!

GOING DEEPER:
1. What areas of your family life are most vulnerable to neglect and drifting?

2. What steps can you take to guard against neglect and drifting in these areas?

[TeenMinistry] Bible Reading Challenge

January and February we challenged our group to a Bible Reading Challenge.  We had several step up to that challenge.  They read a minimum 5 days per week (most of them more).  This Sunday we will be celebrating their accomplishment by going to SkyZone.

Congratulations to:

Renee’ Aston, Laura Portwood, Michalie Brown, Lindsey Keim, Dion Shaffer, Lizzy Smith, Nathan Enix & Zach Hirth

Being in God’s Word daily will make us more effective in His Kingdom and bring us in a closer relationship with our Creator!!!!  How can we be a light to the world if we don’t know anything about the source of energy!?

If you completed the reading but your name is not let me know ASAP.  These are all the people that I know of who turned in their signed sheets.

Mike

[TeenMinistry] Because of the Cross

I always sign my letters “Because of the Cross”.   It’s a simple little thought that I started signing early in my ministry, perhaps during college and have done so ever since.

In class yesterday morning we talked about the sacrifice of the Father and watched a powerful mini-movie – “Most” that depicted a father’s sacrifice of his son to save many.  Looking at John 3:16-17 and Ephesians 2 we talked about the sacrifice of God’s Son on the Cross and how that sacrifice gives us new life, full life – a life that is no longer ours but belongs to God.

Last night seventeen of us gathered at the Hirth’s house (thanks Hirths!) to watch – at the beginning of Passion week – The Passion of the Christ.  It’s only the 2nd time I have seen the movie, and for some there it was their first.  After the movie we shared in a moving time of worship and communion with one another.  We talked about Romans 5.  In verses 8-9 Paul writes “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from the wrath of God.”  Each blow, each whip or scourge, each nail and insult that was taken by Jesus, was taken because of me.  He took my sin and because of that I can now rejoice that he has become my substitute – that was supposed to be me there.  God’s wrath was supposed to be upon me…but Jesus took it.  What a reason to rejoice!  What an awesome time we had sharing, praying, rejoicing and communing together!!!

Our Western Cultural view has tamed the meaning and the picture of the cross.   We paint pictures of it and we wear it as jewelry but the cross was not pretty, the cross was not “in style”.  The cross was a shameful, horrible way to die - it was costly - it cost Jesus everything.  Because of it though, God looks at me (and you) through the blood of Jesus and says “It was worth it.”  I am reminded that the little saying “Because of the Cross” isn’t just a saying…it is my life.  My life is now because of the Cross.  My marriage, my family, my house, my car, my job, my strength, my money, my hope, my joy, my peace…everything I am, everything I ever hope to be is because of what Jesus did for me on that Cross.

It is my prayer that our youth group will continue to come to an understanding that living for Christ will cost them everything, but it’s worth it!

Mike

Who: Freshmen – Seniors (freshmen & sophomores - if you’re serious about looking for a college)

When:  March 13-15 – leave after school on Thursday (4:30 PM), return Saturday evening (Friday is the 1st day of Spring Break) – Depending on the size of the group, we will either leave from my house or the Lafayette building.

Cost:  Split the cost of transportation, expenses;  plus your meals and money for Friday night campus activity (game or movie)

Need:  Sack Dinner for Thursday night.  Sleeping bag, pillow, meal money, MATURITY – there will be a lot of “open time” that you will be responsible for filling with going to class and checking out the campus – after letting me know you are coming, you need to contact Mark Pruitt at Harding Admissions by calling 1-800-477-4407 – he can set you up a schedule for classes and meetings with teachers.

Most of your meals will be on campus.

Details:  This is for students looking into college options.  You will have opportunities to go to classes and talk to counselors, go to chapel.  You will also take a tour of Harding with Mark Pruitt.

Lodging:  You will stay with Harding Students (probably from Lafayette) – if you want to make your own lodging arrangements, that’s fine, I just need to know and I need your parent’s permission – otherwise, I will be making arrangements for you.

How to Sign up: Sign up on the Teen Room Door and pay $35 – this number may fluctuate up or down a little depending on the number of students going.

QUESTIONS:

  • Can I bring a friend?
    • Yes – only if they are interested in looking into Harding as a viable option for college
  • I’m a parent, can I go?
    • Yes – you should talk to me about options to make this trip work for you.
  • I’m not really interested in Harding but want to go hang out, is that OK?

[TeenMinistry] The Passion of the Christ

Next Sunday night the youth group is invited to the Hirth’s House for a viewing of “The Passion of the Christ”.  We will meet there (click here for map) at 5:30 PM.  Eat dinner before you come.  We will watch the movie and have a time of worship and communion together.  We will be done by 8:30 PM.  (if you want to come and need a ride, let me know and I can arrange a ride for you – or we can bring the church van if there is enough).  This is not the typical youth group gathering – there will not be munchies or sodas.

PLEASE NOTE:  “The Passion of the Christ” is Rated R for violence.  For obvious reasons, this is probably one of the only rated R movies I would “recommend” as a youth minister.  However, I will note that this movie may not be for everyone – especially those in middle school and that parent discernment should be used for this youth group activity.  Please consider the Plugged-In Online Review if you haven’t seen this movie for yourself (as a parent).

On the other hand, all too often we do not really take into consideration the measure of suffering that our Lord went through because of sin he took away from me (us) – this movie is a stark reminder of the price that was paid so that I could have a relationship with my creator.

[TeenMinistry] Keep Reading

Just a few more days on our reading schedule this first time around!  Keep up the good work…You actually get an extra day or so.  Bring your sheet to Lee Ann in the Middle School Class on Sunday (I will be out of town – don’t look for me J ) .  Make sure you’ve signed it – which means “on your honor” you have read the scriptures on the page.  If you were reading on your own, hand in your notes of the days you read – signed as well.  Those who have read will choose what the group does together.

We will start another reading challenge on Sunday!

See you all tonight in class.  We are studying Acts and practicing some songs for next week’s visit to the nursing home.
