National Conference on Youth Ministries NCYM Update

Graduate Class Please CLICK HERE to let us know if you plan to bring your children to the conference and what their ages are so that we can more accurately plan for your needs. If you need to bring your small children to the conference, we have a treat for you this year! The following is information regarding babysitting at the conference in Atlanta: The babysitters will be college girls screened by Perry Price (NCYM board member and local Atlanta Youth Minister) and are members of his church. We will always use at least 2 sitters at a time. The age range we can accommodate will be toddlers up to age 5. We will try to maintain a 1 to 5 child/sitter ratio. The babysitting service will be free to the attendees on a first come-first served basis. If there are too many children for the size of the room, we will need to restrict the numbers and/or limit the time the child is allowed to stay. We plan to provide the service during all keynotes/worship times and for the women's class offerings. The babysitting room will be periodically monitored by board members and other designated adults. We also plan to have a camera set up to constantly monitor the room from the outside. We will have some toys and activities available, but it would be helpful if parents brought some of their child's favorite toys too. There will be disinfectant spray used on toys and surfaces after each babysitting session. We will have Cheerios, Goldfish, and water available for a light snack. This will be a low-key type of service for the attendees and is not intended to be a daycare center. We just wanted to make coming to the conference a bit easier for the moms, and we assure you that your child will be loved and taken care of in a safe environment. Our guidelines are not set in stone, and we are willing to adjust if we need to. It started unofficially with a half dozen guys sitting on tables discussing ideas for this aging group of youth ministers and has morphed into a list of about 45 guys and gals, all with more than 15 years of full time ministry behind them. While focused to speak to youth ministry professionals with 15 years or more in the field, there are no restrictions on the number of years one has been in ministry to qualify for the pre-conference gathering. If this interests you, sign up. There are, however, only 35 spaces available—register soon! Your $50 pre-conference registration fee can be paid along with your general conference fee online by clicking here. The schedule for this inaugural year of Band of Brothers starts with a coffee reception on Wednesday morning, January 2 at 9 AM followed by sessions of encouragement, sharing and discussion facilitated by Jeff Walling. Lunch is on-our-own but we hope that we might choose to eat in clusters of manageable small groups. Our sessions will end by 5 PM. The National Conference on Youth Ministries is committed to helping youth ministers grow in all facets of their ministry.  An important part of our conference is continuing education. 

This year we are pleased to offer a post-graduate class taught by Dr. Barry Stephens from Lubbock Christian University.

 

MIN 6352 – Studies in Adv. Church Leadership Change and the Leadership System

 

COURSE SUMMARY:  Dr. Barry Stephens will offer a Master’s course that addresses issues that affect anyone in fulltime min­istry.  The course will be a study of leadership models in churches, and how those models affect and are affected by change.  Specific attention will be given to approaches that move churches out of unhealthy models of leadership to more effective leadership and ministry models.

[TeenMinistry] Shopping??? Only if you make me!

Just a reminder…Sounds like we may have a great turn-out for this.

Can’t shake your parents long enough to get them a Christmas gift?  Want to spend a little time with friends while getting some Christmas shopping done?  Haven’t even thought of Christmas yet?

 

This Sunday (December 9) we will go to West County mall following our morning classes.  Bring some money for lunch at the mall and enough to get your list taken care of!

 

We will be back from the mall by 3 PM

 

Come on guys this isn’t just for gals…don’t leave me hangin’ on this one!!!!  Your moms aren’t always going to be there to buy your presents for you!!!

[TeenMinistry] Calendars

Thank you Lafayette for your support of our youth group!  With your help we raised about $225 for the Teen Center.  A few of our teens raised a little for some youth group events as well, including Rochelle Aston who topped in at 16 calendars sold for a total of over $30.

 

Look for the calendars on Sunday.  I will try to find you individually but if I don’t, you can find me in the Jr. High room (next to the Teen Room) in the back hallway after classes.

 

If you didn’t get one, we have 3 extras left.  They are $10.

[TeenMinistry] Teen House Clean up

Teens – if you’re sitting around this afternoon looking for something to do, Charles, Michalie, and I will be at the Teen House doing some clean up at 5:30 to 6:45 PM.

 

 

David Waters, Terry Smith and John Haustein have been working very hard over there!  We want to try to clean up so they can keep making forward progress.

[TeenMinistry] Service Project - Wednesday Night

This Wednesday evening (December 5) our Youth Group will be going to the nursing home with the Children’s Ministry. 

 

We will leave the building promptly at 7 PM.  Don’t be late J

 

We will return by 8 PM.

 

Since the van is used by the Children’s Ministry, we need adult drivers to join us!!!

[TeenMinistry] Christmas Caroling to our Neighbors

Wednesday evening, December 19, we will be caroling in our Lafayette neighborhood.  We will leave the building at 7 PM and sing to our neighbors on Rojean (the street that the office and Teen House is on.)  We will be back to the building by 8 PM.

 

Next Wednesday, December 12, we will be preparing packages to give to those we “entertain”.

[TeenMinistry] Winter Quarter Classes

Teens,

This quarter’s Sunday classes are listed below. 

 

High School – Culture & Christian

Greg & Sue Finn and Alan & Becky Shepherd

We plan to conduct a study built around popular media and culture, emphasizing where movies / music / media have positive messages. We will contrast these with negative messages or patterns of behavior. An example would be media giving examples of self-sacrificing love versus exploitive or destructive relationships. We will also explore how media often take biblical themes as their subject matter and why these are attractive to us. Examples would include stories of redemption (prodigal son saga). We will also explore stories that show sacrifice for good that lives even beyond one's death (the Star Wars films). The goal is to have you think about the food you feed your brains and help you interpret the themes and messages.

Out of all the New Testament writings, James, the brother of Jesus, shares how to actually live out your faith in a practical way that can make a difference.  Watch out though, it’s kind of a dangerous ride!

“Nov 21, 2007 – I am your neighbor across the street on Rojean.  Thank you for Chris Payne (Becker).  She and a number of children wanted to rake my leaves!!  What a wonderful thing to do.  I had been hoping to get someone to do it for me and there they were – leaf blower and rakes in hand smiling, joking among themselves, and actually seemed to be enjoying it.  I am still smiling.  God Bless you all”  - Mr. V Frances Siefert

 

 

We can go on mission trips to far-off lands and meet in our building every Sunday but unless we are practicing the presence of God in our lives daily with people at school, work and in our own back yards, we are missing the call of Christ in our lives!

[TeenMinistry] Area-wide Praise Service - TIME CORRECTION!!!!

PLEASE NOTE THE TIMES ARE DIFFERENT FROM THE ORIGINAL E-MAIL

 

 

As has been announced in the bulletin, this Sunday is the Area-wide Praise service.  Please plan on attending with your family!  Like last year, the teens will meet together for a TABS event.  This is scheduled to begin at 5:30 PM and end by 7:00.

 

 

 

IF your family is not going and you need a ride, please let me know ASAP.  We can take the van if anyone needs transportation.  The van will leave at 4:30 PM and return by 8:00.

 

 

ALSO – if you can bring a new or gently used toy for the North City church Christmas Outreach

Teens We Need You!
 
                 In order to make some more money for the teen house we need one more person to decorate a box for the new fundraiser that we are doing. We will be now collecting used ink cartridges and old cell phones. We will be turning old used items into money and new house items for us. If anyone can help talk to Lynn or Chelsea on sunday or give them a call.
